Create Let-in Gable

Purpose

A let-in gable is similar to a drop gable in terms of application, but instead of dropping the TC, new structural members are let in between the existing joints to create a double-stacked chord; notches are applied to the upper member, similar to a drop gable. The difference is that let-in members are structural and the original TC member becomes non-structural, above the heel configuration.

Prerequisites

An existing truss

1.  There are two ways to create a let-in gable:

  • Use the lg command on the top chord command profile line:
    • Use the lg # # command - the first # is the size of the let-in top chord member; the second # is the length or setback of the Let-In TC member to use, defaulted to Full to extend throughout, and with a minimum of 3" (at any location) and anything up to Full.
    • Use the lg # # # command - This command allows easier entry for transition trusses and special cases where a let-in is not needed end-to-end. The first # is the size of the let-in top chord member; the second # is the StartX location; the third # is the StopX location, which stops let-ins at that location, trimmed to the next closest joint

  • On the Gable dialog, use the Letin TC option. The Structural Gable option must be selected in order to create a let-in gable (let-in gables must be structural).

If using the dialog, select the size and stop location. StopX stops the let-ins at the specified location, trimmed to the next closest joint.

2.  Make any other edits and click OK to save your changes.

Note: A Do Not Notch dimension line automatically appears in the heel area to indicate where notches are not allowed, and a note on the TDD indicates that 1.5" notches are allowed.
